Boarding schools for the spread of education

By: Robert Baird

The basic level of education is initially imparted to a child in a school and therefore it is doubtless to admit that the schools have a very important role to play in the growth and development of the child, his personality and his general awareness. There are different kinds of schools set up for different purposes. Primary schools are meant to provide primary education while there are secondary schools to guide through before entering institutes of higher education like colleges and universities. Traditionally schools require the students to assemble at a particular time of the day and they are released at another stipulated time according to the daily routine. During this time spent in the school, the student interacts with the teacher and enriches his knowledge. Boarding schools are similar but the only difference they have with these schools is that in boarding schools, the students or the boarders not only study but also live within the school campus till the term is over. The term ‘boarding' implies provision for food and lodging and thus boarding schools are educational institutions where students get to live with their teachers and fellow students away from the comforts of their home and familiar people. Several private schools are boarding schools and it is necessary to note here that most of these children who enroll themselves in the boarding school spend a considerable part of their growing up years within the confines of the boarding school and hence the school plays a very significant role in shaping the future of the child.

In boarding schools, the students have to conform to several steadfast rules laid down by the authorities and upon flouting a rule, the student will be exposed to harsh punishment. All forms of movement within or outside the school premises are restricted and those who are appointed for supervising over the students in the residential schools are to be notified of every activity within the campus. The boarding school consists of dormitories, dining halls, libraries, common rooms, sports facilities etc. all boarders have to conform to a strict daily routine which sets down the time for other activities apart form studying as well. Twice or thrice a year, the boarding schools allow their students to visit their kin during the holidays. Some boarding schools allow non-boarders to study as well. There are certain boarding schools which also allow their students to visit their homes during the weekends.
